The Cambridge University Automobile Club

The Cambridge University Automobile Club is the second oldest still-running car club in the UK, after the Royal Automobile Club. The CUAC was founded in 1902. The club accepts members who are currently studying at or are alumni of the Cambridge University. It is part of the London Countries Association of Motor Club and the Association of Eastern Motor Clubs.

 

History

With over a century of continuous history, the Motor Sports Association recognises the Cambridge University Automobile Club as the second oldest car club in the UK. With a single exception, the CUAC has always been under the direct government of the student body. That is in line with university’s rule regarding student societies.

Notable events in the club history include:

  • 1902 – the foundation of the club;
  • 1947 – CUAC organises the first motor race in England after WW2;
  • 1983 – a fuel economy contest against the Oxford University Motor Club in Austin Maestros cars;

Early members of the club included banking magnates Anthony and Lionel de Rothschild, famous engineers Harry Ralph Ricardo and Frederick James Dykes, and Master of Corpus Christi College William Spens. The club takes pride in its inclusiveness. At present, students from around the world and all social backgrounds participate in its events and races in the capacity of members.

 

Current Events

The Cambridge University Automobile Club organises many social events for club members. These range from pub runs and formal dinners to speaking engagements by motorsport luminaries like James Barclay, Oliver Turvey, and John Surtees.

 

The British Universities Karting Championship

CUAC has several teams competing in the British Universities Karting Championship, one of the most prestigious of such events in the country. Not only that, the club offers tuition for karting enthusiasts with little to no experience in the field. Try-outs are open to all university members who profess an interest in the sport.

 

CUAC Karting Championship

The annual races of 5/6 rounds in the current CUAC’s biggest event. The races take place on karting circuits near Cambridge. Both students and Cambridge alumni can take part. The Karting Championship is among the more popular sports events happening at Cambridge University. They attract a large crowd and are accompanied by other social gatherings and festivities.
